JOSEPH-MARIE BOISSONNEAU dit SAINTONGE
(1750-1824)
Vue de Chateau Richer
Occupation: Farmer
Joseph-Marie was born May 30, 1750 (1), St-Jean, Ille de Orleans, Quebec, son of Jean-Baptiste and Marie-Josephte (Demeule). He was the youngest boy and the second youngest child. He married Marie-Madeleine Blouin at the church in Saint-Jean parish, isle d’Orleans October 3, 1785 (2). Joseph was thirty-five years of age.
The youngest son would have little chance of inheriting the family farm — but in Joseph-Marie’s case, he was the only son to survive into adulthood. His three older brothers all died as infants. He also had a younger sister who died as an infant. He was the only surviving male and even among his sisters, of which there were six only three lived to be over thirty years of age.
There was a marriage contract between Joseph and Marie-Anne Charland, daughter of Louis Charland and Marie Dufresne, prepared by notary Crépin and dated November 13, 1780, which was later rescinded.
Joseph and Madeliene had four boys and four girls: Marie-Marguerite, Joseph-Charles, Marie-Anne, Madeliene, Amable (Jean-Baptiste), Françoise-Hyacinthe, Pierre-Félix and Susanne.
Joseph died January 14 1824 (3) (4), in St-Jean, isle d’Orleans. They buried him in the graveyard at St-Jean.
There is not much information on this period, but Joseph Charles, son of Joseph and Magdeleine Blouin went to the Sault Ste.Marie region to fight in the War of 1812-14 between Canada and the United States. He would have been accompanied by his brother Amable who later returned to his home province of Quebec.
