JEAN-CHARLES CÔTÉ 1750-1813

Born in Saint-Antoine-de-Tilly, Lotbinière, Québec, June 22, 1750, Jean-Charles Côté was the second son of Louis Côté and Marie-Josephte Houde. His baptismal certificate he names him Louis-Charles, most probably to honour both his father and the older brother that lived but six months. However, in his marriage and death registrations, he appears to have used the name Jean-Charles.

According to the information I have gathered, he would have lived a life of privilege compared to others in his village. His father’s position and wealth would have afforded him benefits not available to everyone.

On the 22nd of  April 1771,  he married Marie-Françoise Bergeron in Saint-Antoine-de-Tilly, Lotbinière. Their marriage produced five children; Françoise, Genevieve, Jean-Charles, Louis and Pierre. The marriage was one that ended with her death in 1795.

His second wife, Marie Charlotte Rognon dit Laroche, was the sister of his second youngest brother’s wife. The marriage took place one year after the death of Marie-Françoise, on October 11, 1796, in the same parish. The second marriage produced no children.

Jean-Charles died July 10, 1813, in Saint-Antoine, leaving behind his second wife.
