FRANCOIS AUGER
(1701 - 1751

          François was the fourth son of Louis Auger and M-Antoinette Barabé. I could not locate his baptism but the Tanguay Collection documents his birthday as 1701, the day and month, are not stated. The family settled in Deschaillons-sur-Saint-Laurent. Both names Auger (Augé) and Maillot (Maihot) are prevalent in the area, as are their first names. This causes much confusion, in trying to locate and identify who is who.

          François married Françoise Maillot daughter of Pierre René and Francoise-Marguerite (Gauron), on the 27th of February 1726, in Lotbinière, Québec and together had eleven children.

          François remained in Lotbinière all his life and died on October 2, 1751. According to notes by J. Barabé, François lived in Deschaillons, but the funeral mass was in Lotbinière. They identified him as a widower in his parish death record.

          His second youngest brother became a prominent merchant in Montréal and his name appears in Volume IV (1771-1800) of The Dictionary of Canadian Biography. According to the article, François’ son Michel was most likely the one who took over the business, as Etienne Auger treated him like the son he never sired.

          One wonders if the Auger boys helped in the eel fishing and mill when Michel Lemay passed away or even worked with him while he was still alive. We know that his eldest sons were involved in fur trading and François probably used their able bodies to help with his fishing operations during the fishing months.
