Marriage Bond of Hugh and Susannah
BIRTH
Susannah or Susanna Dunbar was born in Tyrone, Ireland in 1806. At the age of twenty, she emigrated to Canada and settled in Toronto Township. On May 20th 1830(2), she married Hugh Bell, son of William and Flora Bell in Hornby, Halton County, Ontario. The transcription of the marriage bond appears to be 1838. However, It is possible the application for the license was probably made on April 8th not the 12th as first written. As to the year is that also and error or did the couple not marry until 1838? Susannah is listed as a spinster indicating she was not previously married and their first child Matilda was born in 1830. A verification of church records might clear this up, however a cousin who has researched this thoroughly has yet to find something. Some documents say Matilda was born in Ireland but again, this could be in error as Susannah immigrated to Ontario in 1826. The families might have known one another in Ireland and immigrated to Canada at the same time
Susannah and Hugh would have a family of six or seven children consisting of five girls and two boys. *Some of my information on Susannah is not vetted so I would appreciate any input from anyone who may have more information about the Dunbar family.
Susannah was Church of England (Anglican) in faith.
LIFE IN CANADA
Susanna Bell, appears on the 1871 census. She had been widowed(5) since 1866. Also on the same two pages are the families of Craigs and Henrys. Both family names show up with Susannah in 1881 census, and a John Henry was a witness at her daughter Flora Anne’s marriage to Alexander McLennan. I was able to find out that the first husband of Susannah and Hugh Bell's grand daughter, Susannah Beaty was indeed a man by the name of Joseph Henry therefore linking the Henry name. Their grandson John Cathcart jr. also married a girl by the name of Harriet Jane Henry.
Hugh died young and it appears that the family struggled as Susannah is present in the 1881 census in the Toronto, Peel County census with her grandson Nathaniel in her care. This would have been a few years after the death of her son William's first wife, Jane McDowell and just one year after the death of his second wife Catherine Bovill. They are living in a hotel or rooming house. From an excerpt from information on Meadowvale, she was living at the Commercial Hotel, owned by Joseph Kearney. This hotel would have sat on land that was once owned by William Bell (willed to Robert Bell),1051 Old Derry Road, pt. Lot 11, E1/2, Conc 3 WHS. Perhaps arrangements were made by Hugh before his death to provide her with a place to live.

DEATH
Susannah lived to the ripe old age of ninety-two according to her obituary causing further discrepancies in her actual birth year. It read as follows
April 27 1898 -- Ashgrove (1, 3)
Only 8 years short of a century was the age at which Grandma Bell died at William McDowell's on Wednesday. She was born in Tyrone Ireland in 1806 and came to Canada at age 20 years and remained in Toronto Township for 60 years. Her husband Hugh Bell died in 1866.
The deceased lived at the home of her son-in-law Wm. McDowell for the past 10 years.
Children:
Mrs. Cathcart of Chicago
Mrs. Mclennan of Orillia
Mrs. Wm. McDowell, Esquesing
Margaret died in infancy
John died in Toronto Township in 1865
William of Stewartown
The deceased was a member of the Church of England and highly respected. The burial took place at Ashgrove on Friday.
This appeared in the local newspaper and was a clipping I found in the family bible.
Her place of residence at her death was Lot 12 Concession 4 County of Halton
The Hugh Bell (son of William Bell and Jane McDowell), stone stands alone with room for many other graves front, back and side. Susannah is buried not in Saint Peter's Erindale Cemetery with Hugh but in Ashgrove Cemetery with many McDowells. There is a stone for Susan McDowell (daughter of William McDowell and Jane Bell) with other groups of stones on the other side of the cemetery.

CHILDREN OF HUGH BELL AND SUSANNAH DUNBAR
MATHILDA BELL (1830- 1903) M.4 Jan 1850 (1) SAMUEL BEATY (1829-1859) M.12 Nov 1860 (2) JOHN CATHCART (1826-1892)
Matilda Bell appears to be Hugh and Susannah's first child. Her date of birth shows on several census as 1830 and her
death indicates she was born in 1830 as well.
Mathilda would have four children with her first husband Samuel Beaty, a sawyer; William Thomas (1850-1910),
Mary Jane Beaty (1854-1930), Susanna Beaty (1857-1935), Samuel Beaty (1858-1880). All would take the name of her second
husband. She and John Cathcart had six children; (Richard (1861-1932), John Henry (1863-1922), Hugh Nelson (1866-1922),
Isabella Florence (1868-1948), Jane (1870-1922) and Matilda (1873-1938). Most of the family moved to the USA in 1885.
Mathilda died in Chicago, Illinois, in March of 1903.
Matilda first marriage to Samuel Beaty (Beatty).(1) I found them on the 1851 census for Chinguacousy Township, Peel County with a one year old boy William Thomas and Elizabeth Beaty listed as a widow (who would be fifty at her next birthday).(1) I assume this would be Samuel's mother. Sam was working as a sawyer. Over the next seven years they would have three more children, Mary-Jane, Susanna and Samuel. Samuel, the father died before 1860 leaving Matilda with four small children.(2)
It is unknown if Samuel was one of the original Beaty family that founded Meadowvale. An interesting aside is that the majority of the Beatys were Church of England as was Matilda's family while Samuel, Matilda, Thomas and Elizabeth are listed as United Presbyterian.
Soon after the death of Samuel, Matilda remarried.
Matilda Beatty, widow and John Cathcart, son of Anne and Richard Cathcart dated November 12 1860. The wedding took place at Saint James Church and was performed by Rev. H.J. GRASETT, Rector of St. James, in 1860.(3)
The 1861 census was an eye opener for me. Matilda and John are still in the same place and have four children. William Thomas is eleven years old, Mary Jane is six, Susanna, five and Samuel, three. All children are identified with their father's last name, Beaty. Susanna also shows up on the census for her grandparents, Hugh and Susanna, possibly visiting when the census was taken.
John Cathcart, an Irishman, worked as a cooper.
By 1871, William is working with his step-father as a cooper, and John and Matilda have added five more children of their own; Richard nine, John seven, Hugh Nelson five, Isabella three and Jane, three months old.(4)
Matilda's children from the first marriage are all identified as Cathcart. William Thomas twenty, Mary Jane sixteen, Susannah fourteen and Samuel eleven.
The family moved to Chicago, Illinois sometime after the 1871 census was taken. John died in Chicago October 27th 1892. It was not until March 20th 1903, Matilda died in Chicago.(5)
Children with Samuel Beaty
William Thomas married Lavina Tilson in Normanby, Grey, Ontario in 1880. They had four children, immigrated to the United States. He died in 1910 in Chicago, having at some point divorced his wife.(6)(7)
Mary-Jane married David Eccles of New York, in Brampton, Ontario in 1877. They had two children while in Canada, then immigrated to Chicago in 1890. Mary-Jane widowed in 1906, died in Chicago in 1930 at the age of 75. (8)(9)(10)
Susanna married Joseph Henry, a wagon maker from Norval, Ontario in 1881. They were married in Streetsville, Ontario. She was widowed shortly after and remarried George Frederick Dodson, a painter from Hamilton, Ontario, in 1889. She remained with him until her death in Hamilton, Ontario in 1935 from cerebral Thrombosis caused by suffering from arterial sclerosis during the previous nine years.(11)(12)(13)(14)
Samuel has not been located in my searches as of yet as an adult.(2)
Children with John Cathcart
Richard married Jennie Mills in Michigan in 1898.(15)
John Henry married Harriet Jane Henry in Ontario in 1887 and later moved to the USA. He was in Chicago for a while but died in Indiana in 1922. He worked as a locomotive engineer. They had four children.(16)(17)(18)
Isabella Florence Cathcart married Alexander Gould in Elsdon, Cook County, Illinois in 1891.(19) They had four children during their marriage.(20) Isabella died in Los Angeles, California but I have yet to find the proof.(21)
Hugh Nelson moved with the family to Chicago and worked as a labourer. He married a girl by the name of Johanna Zerck from Hamburg, Germany in 1900(22) and they had one child, Gladys Pauline in 1901.(23) Hugh died in 1922,(24) and is buried in the Rockwood Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. Johanna died in 1938.(25)
Jane Born in 1870 I have only this for Jane.(26)
Matilda Born in 1873,(27) married Horace Hughes in 1895 and widowed seven years later.(28) They had one son Horace.(29) The family is present in the 1900 United States Census.(30) Horace would die in 1902 at thirty-four years of age and is buried in Oklahoma.(31) Matilda died in Gary Indiana in 1938.(32)
Matilda's will which was probated in 1907 lists the following as heirs to her estate. Matilda Cathcart-Hughes, Isabella Cathcart-Gould, Mary Jane Beatty-Eckles were to receive each $25. This would indicate that her daughter Jane was deceased. Susanna was still living but in Canada so perhaps they were estranged. The balance of the estate was to be divided between Richard, John and Hugh Cathcart. There is no mention of William Thomas or Samuel. William Thomas was still alive, and like Susanna he may have been estranged, but I have no information on Samuel.
I have a DNA connection with Matilda.

William Bell, my paternal great-grandfather, married three times. My grandfather was one of the children from the first marriage to Jane McDowell. When she died as a result of childbirth he remarried Catherine Bovell then Catherine Coventry-Thompson. The link for each name will take you to the appropriate page.
FLORA ANN BELL (1842-1902) M. 9 Jul 1861 (1) NELSON ATCHISON (1837-1868) M.17 Nov 1870 (2) ALEXANDER MCLENNAN(1841-1901)
It would appear the Bell children of Hugh and Susannah were not so lucky in love and in some cases life. Several died young and those that reached adulthood lost wives or husbands. Born August 2, 1842, (1) Flora first married Nelson Atchison, July 19,1861(2) a local wagonmaker with whom she had four children.(4)
According to my records. Nelson senior died in 1868 and is buried in the Churchville Cemetery, Peel County, Ontario, Canada.(3) The stone has a carving of a soldier on a horse and the words "Fear God".
After her first husband died she married a Scottish carpenter/joiner, Alexander McLennan from Norval, Ontario.(6) They married November 17th 1870. Alexander's parents George McLennan and Janet Fraser are mentioned in the marriage. Interestingly enough the family is also connected through Alexander's father George and his second wife Jane Glover. Jane Glover's older sister Mary Ann, married a James McDowell father of Jane McDowell in my direct Bell line,
The 1871 Canadian Census provides a plethora of information but is also confusing. Alexander McLennan is listed with his wife Mary Ann (should read Flora Ann) and two children Wesley Atcheson age 12 and George Atcheson age four.(5) The family following them is that of Flora Ann's sister Matilda Cathcart. Further down the page is Susanna Bell. Susanna is listed as a widow, unable to write and also deaf and dumb.* Susanna would have been in her mid-sixties at the time but it lists her age as 59. The next family to her is Craig (James) also listed as deaf and dumb and unable to read or write. The Craig family pops up later and is living in the same place as Susannah. I am not sure what the connection is.
Flora Ann died January 18 1902, in Toronto and is buried in Prospect Cemetery Sec 12 757 as per The Ontario, Canada, Toronto, Trust Cemeteries, 1826-1989.

Children with Nelson Atchison
John Weslely (1859--) Oldest son of Flora Ann Bell and Nelson Atchison was born in 1859. I was able to decipher his age from two of the Census' reocords. That of 1861 and 1871.(5).(6) It appears that Nelson married a girl by the name of Elizabeth Poole in 1890.(8) The name for the mother of the groom is however Isabelle not Flora Ann (transcription error)? Obviously this is not positive match but a man of his age marries this girl in Toronto Township then moves to Fenelon Falls where a child by the name of Nelson Grove Atcheson is born, therefore giving the child his father's name.(9) Anyone please help me to add to or discard this area. Another child is born by the name of Claude in 1897,(10), this time in York Toronto, Ontario. On the Birth Registration it documents that Wesley is a barber, living in Toronto, York, Ontario. It appears that John Wesley died sometime before 1911, as his wife and two children appear without him.(11)
Susan Jane (1863--1864) According to the gravestone for her father Susan Jane born 13 May 1863 lived to be only thirteen months of age.(3)
Hugh Nelson (1865--1895) Hugh Nelson, younger brother of Susan, March 14 1865, is also mentioned on the gravetone of Nelson. He died in 1865 at just six months of age.(3)
Nelson George (1866) I know little of George Nelson other than an approximate date of birth from a census.(12) More research is needed to find him. He also appears in the 1881 Canadian Census.

JOHN BELL (1843-1865)
John Bell was born in 1843 in Meadowvale, Ontario, second son for Hugh Bell and Susannah Dunbar. He only lived to be twenty-two years old and died November 23 1865 He is buried in Saint Peter's Cemetery, Erindale, Ontario, in a grave with his father.(1)(2)(3)
ELIZABETH MARGARET BELL (1845 - )
Elizabeth I found in the 1861 census is 16 years old. I did find some evidence mentioning she is buried in the same spot as John, who died in 1865. The forgotten daughter? Why is she not mentioned in the obituary of Susanna? That same census mentions that one of the female occupants of the home was not family. This would be Susanna Beaty, the five year old grandaughter of Hugh and Susannah and daughter of Matilda.(1)(2)
Margaret Bell (possible theory)
The only information I have on Margaret Bell is in the obituary of Susannah, her mother. It mentions her name a says that she died as an infant. There is a gap between Matilda and William and another between Flora Ann and John perhaps she was born then? Interestingly Elizabeth is not mentioned in the obituary. It is possible her name was Margaret Elizabeth and the choice of the word "infant" in Susannah's obituary was a poor one.(4)

JANE BELL (1846-1919) M.19 Feb 1867 WILLIAM MCDOWELL (1843-1921)
Jane Bell was the youngest of Hugh and Susannah's children. Born in Meadowville, Ontario in 1846. When she married she would migrate near her brother William in Esquesing Township. It is possible her brother William Bell met his first wife also Jane McDowell through William McDowell as they were siblings. There is an obvious tie between the two families.
