M-JEANETTE FERNANDE CÔTÉ
1923-2022
Fernande Côté was born September 2, 1923, in Saint-Flavien(1), Lotbinière, third daughter of Pierre Côté and Marie Auger.
She came from a blended family as her father had been previously married to Fédéra Hamel from 1914 until her death in 1919. The couple had four children during their marriage.
Fédéra died January 1, 1919, when her youngest child was one year of age.
Pierre married Marie Auger October 7th of the same year in St-Edouard, Lotbinière, Québec. He and Marie would have six more children over the next twelve years.. Fernande was the fourth born in the second marriage.
Because life was hard for the family, they sent Fernande to a more fortunate neighbour to care for younger children when she was only a child herself..
The extra money from her job and, most likely, jobs of other siblings added to what the family had to get by.
Fernande married Jos. Adrien Boissonneault March 6th 1943 in St-Flavien de Lotbiniere, Québec, Canada.
Their first child arrived eleven months later, born in Montréal while Adrien was working there. Their second child, Richard, was born one year later, also in Montréal.
The next child was born in Sainte-Émmelie, Lotbiniere one and a half years after Richard, followed by Gilles in 1951 and three others after that.
Mostly, Adrien worked away from their home in Val-Alain, Lotbinière, where they had a working farm. The young boys helped their mother with the farm chores..
Later in their marriage, Adrien started a well drilling company with his brother, and at this point was home more often.
In the 1960s Fernande took a job at the local sewing manufacturer and when the new highway expropriated land, they sold and moved the house nearby.
While they no longer farmed acres, Fernande always kept an enormous garden, and the family stored the produce over the winter, providing nourishing food for the family.
They also kept chickens, ducks, and rabbits preserving the meat in the fall.
When the three older boys had left home, Fernande, and Adrien built and ran a dance hall. For several years, the hired bands for the weekend dances and also catered to weddings and big events.
The job demanded much manual labour and Fernande, with the help of some hired help, prepared all the food for the weddings while Adrien arranged for DJs and bands for the venues.
Their life was a full one with no idle moments.
Adrien died in 1978 because of lung cancer, but Fernande lived until April 21, 2022 at ninety-nine. Her death resulted from the Covid epidemic.
